Size guide

Ice hockey gear does not come in one size. Skates – ice and roller – have their own scale, a stick is measured in flex, gloves in inches and most protective gear in S/M/L by level. This guide collects the brands’ own size charts – Bauer, CCM and True – and shows how the numbers match everyday shoe sizes, age, height and weight. Warrior is not in the tables yet.

On PuckYard skates are listed in the size moulded into the boot, sticks by flex, gloves in inches and other gear in S/M/L or Youth/Junior/Senior. The levels cover roughly these ages: Youth 3–9 years, Junior 8–11, Intermediate 11–14 and Senior from 14. Every table is a guide only: brands change their charts from one season to the next, and two models in the same size can fit differently. Always measure, and try the gear on before you buy.

Skates

Skates have their own size scale, about 1.5 sizes below the US shoe size, so the number in the skate is not a shoe size. Bauer, CCM and True use the same scale: a size 7 is a 7 at all three, and only the fit (width and volume) differs. On PuckYard a skate is listed in that same size, the one moulded into the boot: read it off your skate and pick it in the listing, halves and all. The table below is for the other direction, when all you know is a shoe size or a foot length.

How to measure: stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall and measure from the heel to the longest toe in centimetres. Measure both feet and use the longer. Skates should fit snugly: the toes may just brush the front when you stand upright, and the heel must not lift.

Sources: the Bauer, CCM and True charts, read on 5 September 2026. The three brands publish the same numbers; where Bauer and CCM differ (Youth 6 and 10.5) both are shown. Youth 9.5 and 12.5 exist only at CCM, Senior 13–15 only at Bauer. Foot length is the brand’s measure of the foot, not of the skate. The listing field carries these same sizes, Youth 6 to Senior 15, half sizes included; the width letter (D, EE, Fit 1-3) is not a size, so put it in the description as the seller of a wide boot should.

Roller skates

Roller skates come in two kinds, and they are sized differently. Inline hockey skates from Bauer, CCM, Mission and Alkali use the ice hockey skate scale above: the number in the boot is the number you would have in an ice skate, about 1.5 below the US shoe size, so the skates table applies unchanged. Tour runs about half a size larger, so look up the number in the boot minus a half. A Marsblade is a frame that mounts on an ice hockey boot and follows that boot’s size. Recreational inline and quad skates – Rollerblade, K2, Powerslide, Roces, Impala and the like – are sold in shoe sizes, EU here and US in America, and for that reason the listing never asks for one: every skate on PuckYard is listed on the hockey scale, which is the same in every country. Recreational skates print their foot length in centimetres next to the shoe size; find that number in the Foot length column of the skates table above and take the skate size on that row.

Wheels and frames are not part of the size: an inline hockey skate runs 72–80 mm wheels by boot size (76 mm in most senior boots), a recreational skate 80–90 mm, and a worn set is cheap to replace – ask what is on the skate rather than whether it “fits”. Sizing is as the brands state it on their own charts; for a brand not named here, check its current chart.

Sticks

A stick has two measures: length and flex, a number for how stiff the shaft is – the lower the number, the softer the stick. Both follow the level (Youth, Junior, Intermediate, Senior), and the length follows the flex: a 30 flex stick is about 127 cm, an 87 flex about 155 cm. On PuckYard sticks are listed by level and flex, for example “Senior 85 flex”.

How to measure: stand on skates with the stick upright in front of you. The end should reach somewhere between your chin and your nose; without skates, between nose and eyebrows. Flex is chosen by weight and strength – Warrior’s rule of thumb is half your weight in pounds, which is your weight in kilos times 1.1. A stick that is cut down becomes stiffer than its number says; one that is extended becomes softer.

Helmets

Helmets come in S, M and L – children’s models also in Youth and Junior – and adjust within each size. The chart is per model, because two size M helmets from the same brand do not cover the same head measurement. Cages and visors follow the size and brand of the helmet.

How to measure: measure the circumference of the head in centimetres just above the eyebrows and ears, where the helmet sits. The helmet should sit firmly without pressing and must not shift when you shake your head.

Gloves

Gloves are measured in inches, the unit every brand uses – Bauer, CCM, Warrior and True. One inch is 2.54 cm. On PuckYard gloves are listed in inches. The Bauer and CCM charts use the same hand length per size, so the table holds for both.

How to measure: hand length runs from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger. The glove should cover the wrist and meet the elbow pad with no gap, and you must be able to close your hand around the shaft.

Protective gear

Shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin guards and pants come in Youth, Junior and Senior (Bauer also Intermediate) and, within each level, in S, M and L. Shin guards are also given in inches. On PuckYard DK protective gear is listed by level and size, for example “Junior M”. Bauer and CCM do not measure quite the same way, so use each brand’s own table.

Shoulder pads

How to measure: chest circumference in centimetres at the widest point, and height. The pad should cover shoulders, chest and back and meet the pants without locking the arms.

Shin guards

How to measure: sit down with skates on and measure from the centre of the kneecap to the top of the skate – to the ankle bone without skates. The guard should cover the knee and reach the skate without resting on it. The inch size is the length of the guard itself, not of the leg.

Jerseys and apparel

Game and practice jerseys come in Youth and Senior, from XS to XXL, plus a goalie cut that is wider across the shoulders. They must be large enough to fit over the shoulder pads, so choose a size above your everyday clothing size. Bauer gives the measurements of the jersey itself; the chest is measured flat, so the circumference is twice the figure.

Goalie gear

Goalie gear has its own scales: leg pads in inches, catch glove and blocker by level (Youth, Junior, Intermediate and Senior), chest protector and pants in S/M/L per level, and the mask by head circumference in S, M and L. The catch hand (regular or full right) is not a size and has its own field in the listing.

Leg pads

How to measure: Bauer uses shin height: sit with skates on and measure from the centre of the kneecap to the top of the skate. CCM uses floor to knee: stand on skates and measure from the ice to the centre of the kneecap. The pad should stand upright when you stand, and the knee should land in the knee cradle; the length above the knee (thigh rise) is a matter of style.

Warrior and older brands

Warrior uses the same units as the brands above – sticks by flex and Senior, Intermediate, Junior and Youth, gloves in inches, protective gear in S/M/L per level, goalie leg pads in inches with the thigh rise stated separately (for example 34+1.5). Warrior’s own tables are not here yet.

Much of the gear traded second-hand is from brands that no longer exist: Jofa, Koho, Easton, Reebok, Mission and Graf. They use the same units, but the fit differs and there is not always a chart left to look up. Measure the gear, and put the measurements in the listing.

Sizes in listings

When you sell, pick the size in the field on the listing – the skate's own size, flex, inches, or level and S/M/L – and also write what is printed on the gear in the description: the number in the skate and the width letter, the length of a stick that has been cut down. When you buy, ask the seller for a measurement if the table and the listing disagree. If in doubt, write to us.
